2013 Playwright Riesling, Tondré Vineyard, Santa Lucia Highlands
This impeccable old meets new world expression of Riesling is rarely seen in California, due to either picking grapes to early or too late. The key to this bottling is our site, Tondré Vineyard. Situated on a southeast facing slope next to famed Garys’ Vineyard, the strong maritime influences and ancient glacial soils set the stage for this terroir to emulate the flinty minerality and vibrant acidity of Europe’s great Rieslings. During harvest, micro-blocks are picked alternately to maintain the consistent phenolic ripeness ideally suited for these noble varietals. Distinct lemon verbena, orange blossom and aromatic white flowers highlight a pure, fresh and flinty acidity akin to an Alsatian or trocken bottling of Germanic origin.
